Iris and the Dragonflies‏

Recently I had the opportunity to read Iris and the Dragonflies and it was a great read.  It is one of those books that kind of catch your attention and you find it hard to stop reading.  Iris and the Dragonflies is written by Rosemary Danielis.  She makes the story easy for both preteens and adults to read without either feeling lost.  The book is geared toward the preteen set but any adult that loves a good mystical and magical read can find themselves sunk into all 336 pages of this book.

The character of Iris is a typical 11 year old girl, or so it seems, until she discovers that she can speak with the Dragonflies that live by a creek near her home, Dragonfly Creek.  Read along as Iris faces friendship, danger, victories and much more as she embarks on a journey to save Dragonfly Creek and those that inhabit it.

I asked Rosemary what inspired her to write this book.  Her response:
This book was written as a tribute to nature and its endless ability to capture my imagination and the memories I have of a magical childhood spent playing outside whenever I could.
One of Rosemary's favorite passages is when Iris goes to the creek to bury the dead dragonfly:
"Iris picked up her things and headed to the creek, stopping when she got there to watch the white-tipped water rushing by.  She went to a nearby tree and pulled off a large leaf before returning to the water's edge.  Opening the matchbox, she transferred the dragonfly to the leaf, placed it on the water and watched as it floated downstream.  It was a ceremonial good-bye.  "I'm sorry, my friend.  I'll never make that mistake again."  The wind picked up, making her hair swirl and the dry reeds chatter as if they were talking to each other.  Around the bend and beyond her view, a squadron of dragonflies flew in to retrieve their fallen friend.  They carried him off with sorrow in their hearts as the leaf went on alone down the stream."
